South Africa's tax system is carrying more weight on fewer shoulders, with new figures showing a widening gap between the number of people paying personal income tax and those relying on state support. Fresh tax statistics reveal a fiscal imbalance that economists say will be difficult to sustain without meaningful economic growth.
This comes after recent tax statistics released by the South African Revenue Service SARS show that just 7.71 million people currently have taxable income assessed, as per the Daily Investor.
That figure stands in sharp contrast to the more than 28 million South Africans receiving some form of social assistance.
