South Africa's long-delayed move to cleaner fuel is once again in focus, with the 2027 ban on high-sulphur diesel still officially standing despite years of postponements.
The transition to Cleaner Fuels Two CF2 has been pushed back multiple times, but recent developments suggest preparations are finally gaining momentum, as per Business Tech .
CF2 represents a significant overhaul of the country's fuel standards, cutting sulphur levels in both petrol and diesel to 10 parts per million. This is a sharp drop from the current limits of 50ppm and, in some cases, as high as 500ppm. The updated regulations also tighten controls on other harmful components, including slashing benzene content to 1 and limiting aromatics to 35, bringing South Africa closer to fuel standards already adopted in countries such as the US, the EU, Australia and New Zealand.
