simbine shocks the world with blistering sprint in botswana

Akani Simbine lit up the track in Botswana as he roared to a blistering 9.90 seconds in the 100m, claiming the fastest time in the world so far this year, Cape town Etc reports.

Racing in front of a packed National Stadium in Gaborone during the Botswana Golden Grand Prix, Simbine held his nerve against Kenyan speedster Ferdinand Omanyala, who pushed him all the way before settling for second in 10.00.

The win reaffirms Simbine's dominance on the African sprint scene, just weeks after securing a 60m bronze at the World Indoor Championships in China - his first individual medal on the global stage.

Saturday's elite meet formed part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold series, attracting athletes from over 30 nations across 20 events.

The Grand Prix also served as a key tune-up ahead of South Africa's national championships in Potchefstroom later this month, where Simbine will look to continue his red-hot form.
