The Zambian government has officially launched an online passport application and payment system on ZamPortal, marking a major milestone in the country's digital transformation journey. The new platform enables citizens to apply for passports and other travel documents from anywhere, at any time, providing a secure and efficient service that is centered on citizen convenience.

Announcing the development through a Ministerial Statement, Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Jack Mwiimbu, highlighted that the initiative aligns with the government's broader digital agenda, spearheaded by the Smart Zambia Institute in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and National Planning.

The digital passport system was designed to address challenges associated with the traditional manual process, such as long queues, high transport costs, and lost productivity, particularly for applicants in remote areas. The project, commissioned in 2022, aims to improve efficiency and service delivery for all citizens.
