Cape Town's status as one of South Africa's top beach destinations has once again come under scrutiny after recent water quality tests detected unsafe pollution levels at one popular stretch of coastline.
While all beaches in the city remain open, concerns persist following past closures linked to untreated sewage entering the ocean.
The latest samples, taken between late November and 3 December, showed that nearly all monitored Cape Town beaches recorded acceptable levels of Enterococci, a key indicator of faecal contamination. The exception was Macassar Beach, situated near the mouth of the heavily polluted Eerste River, where test results revealed unsafe levels.
