Residents of Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal can expect the gradual restoration of municipal services following the suspension of a two-week strike by municipal workers.
The uMsunduzi Municipality has welcomed the breakthrough reached during discussions between management and the South African Municipal Workers Union SAMWU at the Local Labour Forum.
The strike was driven by workers demands over what they described as long-standing salary disparities. The industrial action severely affected service delivery in the city with essential services including refuse removal and infrastructure maintenance disrupted.
