The South African Weather Service has upgraded its Orange Level 5 warning for heavy downpours today. The rains could lead to localised flooding in some parts of Gauteng and Mpumalanga, to an orange Level 9 warning. The level five remains in place for the Free State, North West, and KwaZulu-Natal. Weather Forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobela is urging residents in low-lying areas to take extra precautions as there is a possibility of damaging winds, hail and excessive lightning in these these provinces.

"For tomorrow, widespread chance of rain, showers and thundershowers spread to the eastern provinces covering the eastern parts of the Free State, the eastern areas of the North West into Gauteng, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal as well as the southern parts of Limpopo. A definite chance of rain, thunderstorms and showers early morning over most parts of Gauteng into the Eastern parts of North West and on and off showers are expected to persist through the day.
