The South African Local Government Association SALGA says it is actively working to find ways to ensure the safety of officials handling sensitive investigations and cases in municipalities.
This follows a series of incidents where officials investigating corruption have faced threats and even been killed.
The most recent case involves Mpho Mafole , a forensic audit head at the Ekurhuleni Municipality, who was fatally shot last week in a drive-by shooting.
Its understood that Mafole was investigating a R2-billion shortfall in the City of Ekurhuleni finances at the time of his death.
The motive for his killing is being investigated by the police.
