sabc plus now has 1 million registered users thanks to free live sports broadcasts

The South African Broadcasting Corporations SABC streaming platform, SABC Plus, now boasts an impressive one million registered users since its relaunch in July 2024.

Live sports broadcasts have been the main driver of this registration boost, the state-owned broadcaster said in a statement on Thursday 8 May.

SABC Plus gets to 1 million registered users

The public broadcaster launched SABC in 2022 as part of its digital migration strategy. It features 19 free-to-air radio stations and four TV channels, including SABC Sports . However, users need to register to access it.

Live coverage of sports events has attracted over 60,000 new users per major game, the public broadcaster said.

Additionally, the recent SwitchToStream campaign has further accelerated the platform's growth by educating audiences on the convenience and accessibility of SABC Plus across multiple devices, it added.

The platform regularly covers Betway Premiership matches, CAF Champions League matches that feature South African soccer teams, as well as Bafana Bafana matches.

Notably, it reached over one million viewership during the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations AFCON tournament, according to SABCs 2024 Annual Report .

"We are thrilled to see how quickly South Africans are embracing SABC Plus as a digital destination for the content they love, SABC Digital Marketing Manager Khanyisa Melwa said.

The response to live sports, lifestyle entertainment and special events like the METRO FM Music Awards has been phenomenal, reaffirming our commitment to delivering compelling, relevant content anytime, anywhere."

A MyBroadband analysis also shows that SABC has grown faster than eVOD, the eMedia streaming app that features E-tv channels and launched in 2021.
