The South African Broadcasting Corporation SABC has cancelled popular SABC2 soapie Muvhango and will replace it with Pimville Queens , TV with Thinus reports .
In February, there was uncertainty about the drama series, which has aired for 28 years, amid reports that SABC would not renew its contract.
The SABC can confirm that only one season of Muvhango is currently contracted and that the current contract is set to end on 31 July 2025, the broadcasters head of communications Mmoni Ngubane said at the time.
The SABC cannot comment on the future of the programme at this stage.
The uncertainty stretched back to July 2024 when the state broadcaster pulled the soapie off air for over two weeks without warning. Luckily, it reintroduced it with a new logo and opening sequence.
New characters, such as iconic actress Leleti Khumalo, also joined the revamped series.
Muvhango cannedHowever, it now appears that Muvhango has reached the end of the road. For SABC2 , were introducing a new telenovela starting in August, which is going to be replacing the existing Muvhango , SABC CEO Nomsa Chabeli said, per TV with Thinus .
We are certain that, based on the storyline and where we are in the scriptwriting room, this should also be successful from a launch perspective.
Chabeli added that SABC2 s primetime audience share has declined in recent years. The Venda drama airs between 21:00 and 21:30, Monday to Friday.
Come August, we are launching a new telenovela called Pimville on SABC2 and based on that, we will be really driving that audience share back to SABC2 , Chabeli revealed.
