public protector clears presidency over high presidential jet catering costs claims

The Public Protector has cleared the Presidency and Department of Defence DoD over claims of excessive catering costs on the Inkwazi presidential jet.

Democratic Alliance DA leader John Steenhuisen filed the complaint in 2023, alleging financial mismanagement and improper conduct by the two entities.

He cited reports that catering costs for a 2022 Inkwazi flight from London to South Africa amounted to R600,000 for 18 VIP guests and R91,000 for a cancelled flight to Turkey in 2023.
