public consultation opens on sale of three anchor bay land

The City of Cape Town has opened a public consultation process on the proposed sale of a 4.5-hectare parcel of City-owned land in Three Anchor Bay, just outside the Green Point Common boundary, Cape town Etc reports.

Valued at around R700 million, the site Erf 2187, Green Point is earmarked for mixed-use development aimed at boosting investment and creating jobs in the local economy, with a particular emphasis on affordable housing for residents.

However, an alternative vision has emerged that could reshape how this valuable space is used. The Cape Town Sky Train proposal suggests dedicating a portion of the Three Anchor Bay site for an elevated train terminus, forming part of a new rapid transit line running from Woodstock to Sea Point along the unfinished foreshore freeways.

This elevated rail would feature stops at the Cape Town International Convention Centre CTICC and Cape Town Stadium, fully integrating with the existing metro rail network and providing seamless connections across the city.

Proponents argue that this Sky Train would not only maintain the mixed-use development goals but also dramatically improve urban mobility. With the capacity to carry 30 000 passengers per hour in each direction, the line promises to ease congestion around key hubs like the CBD, Waterfront, Green Point, Sea Point and Cape Town Stadium.
