probe launched into deadly n2 crash that killed eight

The KwaZulu-Natal road traffic inspectorate says the drivers of the two vehicles involved in the deadly crash, which claimed eight lives at Empangeni on the N-2 on Sunday morning, have been taken in for questioning.

Eight occupants of a light delivery vehicle were killed and 16 people injured when a heavy vehicle tow truck, travelling in the same direction, rear-ended the bakkie just after 5 oclock in the morning.

Sindi Msimang from the Inspectorate says the driver of the truck told them that he didnt see the other vehicle. However, the authority suspects that he might have fallen asleep at the wheel.

The deceased - six women and two men - were flung from the bakkie on impact. They are believed to be churchgoers from Khula village at Mtubatuba, and were on their way home after attending a church service at Esikhaweni.

Four of the occupants were critically injured and taken to the Ngwelezane hospital, three of whom underwent surgery on Sunday afternoon.
