Gilbert and Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance docks at the Artscape Theatre next month, now with a fresh, fantastical new twist to the classic comic opera, Cape town Etc reports.

Cape Town theatre lovers can expect sword fights, soaring vocals and a touch of underwater fantasy when The Pirates of Penzance production returns from 4 to 12 July, but this time audiences will be treated to something a little different: a playful mermaid-inspired moment that gives fresh emotional depth to the Victorian favourite.

Director Darryl J Spijkers says the idea came from imagining the world through the character of Frederic's, eyes. Raised almost entirely among pirates, Frederic has never encountered young women before meeting Mabel. In this production, that first encounter becomes something dreamlike and surreal.
