Cape Town's City Hall became a place of memory, music and meaning on 20 January as two of the city's most influential cultural figures were formally honoured for shaping its artistic identity across generations.

David Kramer and the late Taliep Petersen were awarded the Freedom of the City of Cape Town, the highest civic honour available, during a special council sitting that placed their life's work alongside some of the most revered names in the city's history, as reported by The Peoples Post .

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis told the gathering that the award is reserved for people whose contributions are inseparable from Cape Town itself, noting that the honour has only been granted 13 times before, including to figures such as Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Dr Chris Barnard.
