Nigeria Committed to Self-care Awareness - Pate

The federal government has reaffirmed its commitment to integrating self-care into the daily lives of individuals, families, and communities across Nigeria.

Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, made this known in Abuja on Thursday during a ministerial press briefing to mark the Maiden National Self-Care Day.

The minister, represented by Pharm Olubunmi Aribiana, Director, Food and Drugs Services, at the ministry, emphasised the importance of self-care as a necessity, not a luxury, in the pursuit of better health for Nigerians.

"We must prioritize our physical, emotional, and mental well-being to lead healthy, productive, and fulfilling lives.

"Globally, July 24th is observed as International Self-Care Day to highlight the crucial role of self-care in maintaining overall health and well-being.

"It is a day to emphasize the need for individuals to prioritize their physical, mental, and emotional health, encouraging them to engage in practices that promote their well-being, especially during times of stress," he said.

Representing the World Health Organisation WHO, Dr Alex Crasasira, WHO Country Representative in Nigeria, said self-care interventions have the potential to significantly transform how people manage their health and wellbeing.

"With millions in the African region, including Nigeria, lacking access to essential health services and a global shortage of health care workers, self-care interventions have the potential to significantly transform how people manage their health and wellbeing," he said.

Chief Programme Officer at the Society for Family Health SFH, Dr Anthony Nwala, commended the progress achieved since Nigeria adopted self-care practices.

He revealed that self-injection users in Nigeria have increased from 4,000 in 2020 to over 110,000 monthly in 2025.

"This is a testament to the dedication and collaboration among partners," he stated.
