Elon Musk has accused Apple of giving preferential treatment to OpenAI in its App Store rankings, claiming the tech giant's system makes it impossible for other developers, including his AI venture xAI, to claim the top spot.

The billionaire alleged in a post on Tuesday that Apple's conduct amounts to playing politics and violates antitrust laws. Apple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach 1 in the App Store, which is an unequivocal antitrust violation. xAI will take immediate legal action, Musk wrote.

His remarks come amid wider scrutiny of Big Tech's control over app discovery. In the U.S. App Store, OpenAI's ChatGPT app holds the top position among free iPhone apps, while Musk's Grok AI sits at No. 5.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman dismissed the claim and pushed back against Musk directly, accusing him of manipulating X for personal gain. OpenAI will just stay focused on making great products, Altman said, adding, This is a remarkable claim given what I have heard alleged that Elon does to manipulate X to benefit himself and his own companies and harm his competitors and people he doesn't like.
