Mobile network operators appeared before Parliaments Portfolio Committee on Communications and Digital Technologies.
They briefed the committee on universal connectivity as well as on reducing the cost of communication.
MTN Chief Executive Charles Molapisi asked Parliamentarians to assist with the alleviation of vandalism of the mobile operators networks.
Molapisi says vandalism slows the development of the country, "We would like help, this level of vandalism destroys service continuity in many areas. I believe other mobile network operators will agree, if there is an area to plead for support it is in the understanding of the committee on the importance of security in the country and its implications on the network."
He further says, " MTN is selling a smartphones at a significantly reduced price in an effort to give all South Africans access to information, communication and digital education. If our people can't have access to smart phones, our plans will come to nothing. We have launched as MTN, the 4G smartphone for R99 is a device that costs us R800. We can't continue to leave people behind."
