Police Minister Senzo Mchunu says theres been a general decline in crime across the country, however sexual offences including rape and commercial crimes have increased.
Mchunu was addressing the media in Pretoria where he released the latest crime statistics.
National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola provided a detailed breakdown of the fourth quarter crime stats for the period from the 1st of January 2025 to the 31st of March 2025.
Mchunu says the murder rate continues to be a major concern, with Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape and Western Cape dominating criminality in the country.
During this quarter, sexual offences including rape and contact sexual crimes, along with commercial crimes have shown increases. These are deeply concerning trends that demand renewed focus and urgent intervention. We are encouraged that all but one province recorded a decrease in murder incidents that is Northern Cape. Despite contributing only two percent to the national murder statistics, recorded an increase nevertheless. The four high crime provinces Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape and Eastern Cape contributed the bulk of murder incidents nationally.
