A lion research project in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park has been initiated by SANParks in partnership with the Endangered Wildlife Trust to assess population numbers, distribution and movement patterns.
The study will be conducted over the coming months using non-invasive techniques such as camera traps, track monitoring, sightings and photographic identification based on distinctive features including whisker spots and scars.
Visitors may see research vehicles marked with SANParks or Endangered Wildlife Trust logos in the park. The teams, who may briefly approach lions to take research photographs, have requested that visitors keep a respectful distance and avoid crowding the area.
