Police in KwaZulu-Natal say they are concerned about the rising number of extortion cases . The area of Verulam, north of Durban, is said to have reported the highest number of extortion cases.
The most common cases involve criminals demanding protection money from businesses, construction sites or ordinary individuals.
Police say most victims are threatened with death or defamation of character if payment is not made.
