The Johannesburg Metro Police Department JMPD has announced 24-hour roadblocks across the city during the Easter long weekend.
JMPD Spokesperson Xolani Fihla has warned motorists and pedestrians against public drunkenness.
With heavy traffic expected on all main arterials and freeways, the JMPD will maintain a Zero Tolerance' approach to traffic violations. Pedestrians are strictly prohibited from walking on or crossing freeways. Officers will be deployed to remove and cite individuals endangering themselves on high-speed routes. Increased patrols will be conducted in the Joburg inner city, townships, and major hubs to manage heavy foot traffic and prevent pedestrian accidents. Alcohol remains a primary contributor to road fatalities and communal violence during this period. Twenty-four roadblocks will be active across the city. Both motorists and pedestrians are warned that public intoxication significantly increases the risk of fatal accidents.
