Shubman Gill couldn't play too much of a part in the first Test between India and South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. After leading the side commendably during South Africa's first innings, the Indian captain sustained a neck injury while batting on Day 2 Saturday, November 15. He had faced just three balls and scored four runs before the pain was excruciating enough for him to walk off the field.

Shubman was subsequently admitted to the Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata, where his condition was assessed. The 26-year-old couldn't take any further part in the first Test, as Rishabh Pant had to take over as the stand-in captain. The home side lost by 30 runs, failing to chase down a 124-run target on Sunday, November 16.

Cricket Association of Bengal CAB president Sourav Ganguly had visited the hospital to meet Shubman. They had a 15-minute conversation as well.
