historic sea point fire station reveals r7 million restoration

Cape Town City Council has invested R7 861 597.09 over two financial years 2024-2025 to revitalise the Sea Point Fire Station, one of the oldest stations in the metro.

Earlier this week, Alderman JP Smith and Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis toured the site to assess progress, which now stands at 95 per cent complete.

Built in 1932, the station serves as both a working emergency hub and a heritage landmark in Sea Point. Council contractors have repainted the exterior, replaced ageing roof sheets, re-tiled floors and upgraded the electrical infrastructure. They have also installed new gutters and repaired cracks along the facade to safeguard the building's structural integrity CoCT .

Throughout planning and construction, the City's heritage preservation team worked closely with architects to retain original features such as the sash windows and brickwork patterns. This attention to detail ensures the station's historical character endures alongside critical safety improvements.

Our Fire and Rescue Service has a long and proud history in Cape Town and we have the responsibility to maintain and preserve our Fire Station. Fire Stations are beacons of hope for our communities in times of emergencies and it is important for communities to know that they are well-maintained and continue to provide services for those in need for generations to come, said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security Alderman JP Smith.
