Shortly after John Steenhuisen announced he would not seek re-election as leader of the Democratic Alliance later this year, Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis told his local caucus that he was giving serious thought to throwing his hat in the ring.
According to the Mail Guardian, a message Hill-Lewis sent to his caucus was leaked. Hill-Lewis made it clear that, if he chose to run for the top post, he planned to continue as mayor and seek re-election shoulder to shoulder with all of you
He acknowledged that, despite the announcement being only minutes old, numerous calls and WhatsApp messages were already arriving, pressing him on his future plans.
