A swimmer was rescued from drowning at Hermanus' Old Harbour by two quick-acting bystanders using NSRI pink rescue buoys, highlighting the critical role of community intervention in water emergencies.
According to the NSRI , the organisation diverted two rescue craft during training exercises after receiving eyewitness reports of a drowning in progress. Upon arrival, they found the woman already ashore, receiving care from an Italian doctor and other bystanders.
The rescue involved two pink buoys stationed at the harbour, with the first thrown by a bystander falling short before the two Good Samaritans entered the water to successfully bring the woman to safety. She was treated for non-fatal drowning symptoms and taken to the hospital by EMS paramedics.
