Cape Town is grappling with severe weather conditions as heavy rainfall has led to the inundation of several low-lying areas, with concerns growing over the capacity of local canals and vleis, reports
The City's Urban Mobility Directorate is actively monitoring the situation and will conduct a thorough assessment of the affected areas once the rain subsides.
Residents and road users are urged to exercise caution during this tumultuous weather. Motorists are particularly warned to avoid flooded roads and low-water crossings, as conditions may pose significant risks.
The sheer volume of ongoing rainfall is causing vleis, rivers, and canals to reach capacity, water is backing up in the stormwater system and spilling onto our roads, which can act as conduits for water, Mayco for Urban Mobility Councillor Rob Quintas stated.
Localised flooding is expected to affect areas situated near canals and other bodies of water, as well as those lying below steep mountainsides.
