Since the establishment of free maternal and child healthcare in South Africa in 1994, significant strides have been made in reducing maternal and child mortality rates.

Professor Pamela Naidoo, CEO of HSFSA, points out that the concerted efforts initiated under the leadership of the late President Nelson Mandela have been pivotal.

Maternal and child health has expanded remarkably since free maternal healthcare was introduced, she stated, emphasising the importance of continued focus on this critical area of health.
