hawaii mulls cruise reductions

Hawaii is considering reducing cruise ship calls to meet transport emission reduction goals, according to a draft by the Department of Transportation.

The plan includes reducing calls based on levels from 2023:

  • 2030: Reduce total cruise calls by 50 and large cruise ships more than 3 000 passengers by 75.
  • 2035: Reduce total cruise calls by 75 and large cruise ships more than 3 000 passengers by 100.
  • 2040-2045: Limit the cruise calls to 75 below 2023 levels.

As cruise ship schedules are typically planned two years in advance, the draft states that reductions in cruise activity will likely not be implemented until 2027.
