East London is set to be renamed KuGompo City while Graaff-Reinet will become Robert Sobukwe Town following the approval of 21 geographical name changes by South Africas Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie .
According to Business Tech , South African Geographical Names Council Chair Johnny Mohlala confirmed the approvals, noting that the changes still need to be gazetted with formal publication expected in the coming weeks.
East Londons renaming follows a public consultation process conducted by the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality. Graaff-Reinets new name honours anti-apartheid activist Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe .
