govt accused of asking businesses to use apartheid law to racially classify employees

Business groups have accused the Department of Employment and Labour DEL of asking them to apply the apartheid-era Population Registration Act of 1950 to classify employees according to designated groups.

In a statement on Tuesday 9 December, Sakeliga and the National Employers Association of South Africa NEASA published a letter from DEL that cited the now-repealed law.

NEASA had sought clarification from the department on which criteria businesses should use to racially classify employees in line with the Employment Equity Amendment Act of 2023.
