Fluminenses goalkeeper Fabio has matched the record set by former England player Peter Shilton for the highest number of competitive appearances in mens football, reaching his 1,390th match in a Brazilian league fixture on Saturday.
At 44 years old, he was part of the Fluminense squad that advanced to the semi-finals of the Club World Cup held in the United States and started the match in which Fluminense defeated Fortaleza 2-1 in Brazils Serie A, equaling Shiltons record.
Should he participate in the upcoming match against the Colombian team America de Cali in the second leg of their Copa Sudamericana last-16 clash on Tuesday, he will become the sole record holder.
