Gauteng Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela says law enforcement agencies will be deployed to address road infrastructure vandalism and other crime-related issues across the province.

Her statement follows an incident on the R24 in which suspects allegedly attempted to steal electrical cabling, a crime that poses safety risks and damages transport infrastructure.

Diale-Tlabela has condemned the attempted theft, saying such acts create additional financial burdens for the department, which must replace stolen or damaged assets.

"It's disheartening, and our challenge is that we don't get to see who really does this. Instead of continuing to do service delivery work in other areas, we are now expected to spend more resources on security. It has been a serious challenge, a trend that we have been observing for quite some time now. We have put together a team of law enforcement agencies to assist us in monitoring and doing oversight on our road furniture and many other infrastructure that we have in the province," she explains.
