A routine FlySafair flight from Johannesburg to East London took a dramatic turn on Thursday afternoon when a group of passengers reportedly wearing Economic Freedom Fighters EFF regalia began chanting and clapping loudly in the aircraft aisle.

The incident caught the attention of social media users, prompting FlySafair to announce that it is investigating the event, which could have implications for the airlines passenger conduct policies.

The flight, which was filled to its 189-seat capacity, carried numerous EFF members en route to East London to support their commander in chief, Julius Malema, who is scheduled to appear at the East London Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Malema, was convicted in October on five firearm-related charges, including unlawful possession of a firearm and reckless endangerment of persons and property, which likely intensified the atmosphere on the flight.
