The picturesque coastal suburb of Fish Hoek is grappling with a severe water infrastructure crisis, as deteriorating systems lead to frequent leaks, ponding, and the sudden emergence of sinkholes, reports Cape town Etc .
Last Wednesday, a large sinkhole appeared along the busy Corsair Street in Sun Valley, tragically causing injuries to motorists when two vehicles unexpectedly fell into the perilous pit.
As the issue escalates, residents have turned to social media, voicing frustrations over prolonged water outages that have plagued some households for more than four days just within the past month.
Citing ongoing challenges, Pieter Jansen van Vuuren, a Councillor from the Freedom Front Plus, expressed his dismay that the situation has spiralled out of control.
Surprisingly, despite the City of Cape Town allocating R2.3 billion to water and sanitation initiatives in its budget for 2023/24 of which R800 million specifically went to the maintenance and upgrading of pipes, the persistent issues reek of negligence.
