Yesterday's freezing temperatures suddenly make sense now. Winter appears to have arrived a little earlier than expected this year, with the first light dusting of snow reported along the Hex River Valley Mountains , including Matroosberg and Worcester , as well as in Tulbagh and Wolseley, marking the first snowfall of the season.
While snow in these mountainous regions is not unusual during the colder months, its arrival this early has certainly raised a few eyebrows. Typically, snowfall in the Western Cape is more common from late May through to August, when winter systems are at their peak. An April snowfall, however, is less frequent, making this early appearance feel like a sneak preview of the season ahead.
