The Cape Winelands District Municipality CWDM says its teams are still battling a blaze on the mountains above Franschhoek .
Spokesperson, Jo-Ann Otto, says the original fire started over a week ago. She says the fire lines at the top of the Banghoek Valley are still active saying that on Sunday afternoon, CWDM deployed two ground teams to the fire line in an effort to contain it as it moved into more accessible terrain.
During the next operational period, teams will focus on protecting the Banghoek Valley. The terrain remains extremely steep and dangerous, presenting significant operational challenges with no guarantee of success. An aerial crew from Leading Edge will transport ground teams from NCC, CapeNature and MTO Forestry into the area. A reconnaissance flight will also be conducted during the deployment to determine the full extent of the fire line, says Otto.
