Embattled Sol Plaatje Municipal Manager, Thapelo Matlala has taken a 30-day leave period, following mounting pressure from civil society organisations CSOs to have him suspended by the executive council.
Since Tuesday, leaders of CSOs have called for the suspension of Matlala following allegations of corruption, maladministration and interference with supply chain processes against him.
CSOs accuse Mayor Martha Bartlett and Speaker Dipuo Peters of shielding Matlala and have vowed it will no longer be business as usual at the Sol Plaatje Municipality until Matlala is officially suspended. They are accusing all councillors of failing in their oversight role and of being compromised.
