Banyana Banyana head coach Dr Desiree Ellis has praised her side for their defensive performance against Ghana in their opening fixture at the Womens Africa Cup of Nations WAFCON.
South Africa defeated the Black Queens 2-0 in their first group game of the competition to go atop group C on goal difference, tied on points with Mali who bested Tanzania 1-0.
Ellis was more impressed by her sides defensive performance than their goal-scoring display.
Defensively we were really sound. We always know we are gonna create chances and we always say if we can keep a clean sheet we can win the game. Today, our whole team played defensively really well, said Ellis in the post-match press conference.
I think we made the changes at the right time and that also really helped to settle down the team but take nothing from Ghana, they are still a quality side because the first 15 minutes really could have changed the game if we had to concede there.
