driving licence card printing resumes in western cape easing backlog

The Western Cape Government WCG has expressed relief and optimism following the resumption of operations at the national driving licence card printing machine, reports Cape town Etc .

This development is set to alleviate the frustrations of thousands of motorists across the province, who have been left in limbo, awaiting their driving licence cards.

According to Muneera Allie, spokesperson for the Western Cape Mobility Department, the return of the printing machine marks a critical step towards addressing a significant backlog that has plagued drivers since the machine became inoperative three months ago.

We are hopeful that this is the beginning of real progress, Allie remarked, emphasising the need for swift action from the National Department of Transport to clear the escalating backlog of outstanding cards.

As of 2 May 2025, the Western Cape faced a staggering backlog of 108 402 driving licence cards, contributing to a national total of 747 748 cards awaiting processing.
