The City of Cape Town has rolled out a new traffic safety initiative aimed at curbing a frustrating driving habit known as creeping, where motorists edge into intersections without enough space to clear them before the lights change.

Launching on 27 October 2025, the Don't Be a Creep campaign will run through the busy festive season, a period notorious for higher traffic volumes and congestion. The City warns that creeping not only slows traffic but also violates the law and endangers other road users.

Creeping makes congestion worse and tempers flare, said Councillor Rob Quintas, mayoral committee member for Urban Mobility. When motorists block intersections, they trap everyone in gridlock, including emergency vehicles that may be responding to crises. It's unsafe, illegal, and completely avoidable. Don't be a creep, and help keep Cape Town moving.
