South Africa has introduced a fully digital system for processing visas in the creative sector with the rollout of the Screen Talent and Global Entertainment Scheme STAGES. The new platform allows qualified production companies to submit requests online and receive responses within 24 hours, eliminating traditional paperwork, long queues, and unpredictable processing times. Approved applicants then formalize their participation through an agreement with the Department of Home Affairs, ensuring compliance and transparency.
The reform addresses long-standing administrative challenges that have previously slowed foreign film investment and international productions in South Africa. Industry experts note that significant projects, including a major Netflix production valued at 400 million rand, have been lost to other countries due to cumbersome visa procedures. STAGES is designed to streamline access to the local market, providing producers with a faster, more predictable process.
The timing of the reform coincides with strong growth in both the film industry and tourism. Between November 2023 and June 2024, international productions contributed 2.52 billion rand in foreign investment. Tourism figures also show a notable rise, with over 7.6 million international visitors recorded from January to September 2025, an increase of more than one million visitors compared with the previous year. By digitizing visa procedures, South Africa aims to strengthen its appeal as a premier destination for creative productions while supporting broader economic growth.
