The South African National Editors Forum SANEF and News24 have accused South African Police Service SAPS KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, of threatening media freedom in South Africa.
They were responding to Mkhwanazis comments this week at Parliaments ad hoc committee probing alleged criminality, political interference and corruption in the criminal justice system.
He alleged that some journalists have been captured by criminal syndicates and called for their surveillance by State Security. He added that media houses should fire captured journalists, who must end up in prison.
