Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube says school nutrition programmes are essential for learning as hungry children struggle to concentrate and stay in school.

Speaking in the North West on the first day of the 2026 academic year, Gwarube said that R10 billion has been allocated to the nutrition programme.

She says that this is expected to make a meaningful difference to learner attendance and performance.
