Chelsea are preparing to open formal talks with Marc Cucurella over a new long-term contract, Softfootball understands with both player and club aligned on continuing their journey together. The Spanish defender has turned down an offer from Ronaldo's Al Nassr.
As first revealed by Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea will soon present an offer to extend the stay of Cucurella at Stamford Bridge, a sign of growing confidence in the Spaniard's role under Enzo Maresca. Despite external speculation including recent links to Saudi side Al Nassr the Blues are not considering a sale and view Cucurella as an important piece of their tactical puzzle going forward.
Fabrizio wrote on his X handle of the new offer set to be present to Cucurella.
Here is what he wrote:
Club sources told Softfootball last month about Cucurella's "full commitment" to Maresca's project, and he is said to be settled and happy in West London after a strong finish to last season. After a mixed first campaign, the 26-year-old found rhythm and confidence under present manager Enzo Maresca, who has built his defensive mechanism around Cucurella.
The Spanish defender's profile fits seamlessly into the system. The former Manchester City assistant values technically proficient full-backs who can control space and tempo from deeper zones, and Cucurella's versatility on the left flank makes him a natural fit for the hybrid full-back role.
Chelsea's decision to move quickly on a new deal also reflects growing clarity in their defensive planning. While Ian Maatsen departed earlier this summer and Lewis Hall remains on loan, Cucurella is expected to start the season as the club's first-choice left-back, ahead of competition from Ben Chilwell, whose fitness remains under review.
Since joining from Brighton in 2022, Cucurella has made 62 appearances in all competitions, offering tactical flexibility and a relentless work rate. Now, with a manager who believes in his attributes and a club that wants to reward his commitment, the stage is set for the Spaniard to take on a leadership role in the squad.
