Residents walking through Palmyra Road in Claremont this week were met with a noticeably different scene after the City cleared a long-standing informal encampment from the public space, with officials saying those affected had been offered alternative shelter and social assistance.

In a social media post shared earlier today, Cape Town Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis said the area had been restored for public use following interventions by the City, while stressing that accommodation and support services had been made available to people living at the site.

The mayor said those displaced from the encampment were offered placement at the City's Safe Space shelters, alongside support from social workers.
