Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has criticised what he describes as a catch and release approach to drug-related crime after an alleged drug dealer was granted unrestricted bail in the Mitchells Plain Magistrates Court, Cape townEtc reports.
The case centres on a suspect who was arrested by the Citys Metro Police in Woodlands in April after officers allegedly found him in possession of 30 packets of tik. According to the City of Cape Town, the suspect has a previous conviction for drug possession and is also facing separate murder and assault charges.
Hill-Lewis attended the court proceedings on Monday, 13 July, where the matter was postponed until 14 August. He said he was disappointed that no additional bail conditions were requested, despite concerns that the accused could continue operating within the community while awaiting trial.
