Cape Town has exceeded its annual sewer jet-cleaning target by more than threefold as part of a major winter-readiness drive aimed at reducing blockages, overflows and strain on the city's wastewater network.
The City of Cape Town says 625.5km of sewer pipelines have been proactively jet-cleaned, compared with an original annual target of 200km . The preventative maintenance programme is valued at R207.9 million .
The work forms part of broader efforts to prepare the sewer system for increased winter rainfall, which can place pressure on infrastructure through stormwater ingress, illegal connections and foreign objects entering the network.
