Community activists on the Cape Flats say residents of the area are living in fear as gang violence escalates. More than a dozen people have been killed in the violence in the past week. This includes shooting incidents in Kraaifontein.

Chairperson of the Mitchells Plain Community Police Forum, Norman Jantjes says they have noticed an increase in coordinated attacks.

"If we look at the first three months of this year, we had an average of 15 murders a month. I think since April it started going up and now in August it was even worse. I think we had more than 20 murders for the month of August. Were in September now, it is only the 16th, and weve seen I think were standing around about eight now for the month. So yes, weve seen an escalation over the past few months, and it looks like its a sustained thing and its highly organised."
