cachalia defends r600m 30 june police operation amid criticism

Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has defended the decision to spend more than R600 million on the 30 June security operation, arguing that the cost of preventing violence was far lower than the consequences of another nationwide crisis, Cape town Etc reports.

Speaking during an Inter-Ministerial Committee IMC on Migration media briefing, Cachalia reportedly said the operation was designed to ensure the country did not relive the devastating unrest that shook parts of South Africa in July 2021.

The government faced intense scrutiny after deploying thousands of police officers ahead of demonstrations linked to growing frustration over undocumented immigration .
